War of words over BA strike support

British Airways has clashed with union leaders over the effect of a strike which hit flights and caused disruption for passengers.

The first walkout by the airline's cabin crew for 13 years sparked a war of words between the two sides, while the political heat on Prime Minister Gordon Brown was also stepped up.



The Conservatives released a new advert depicting the Prime Minister as a pilot, wearing a Unite cap, and bearing the message: "Gordon's Doing Sweet BA".


BA claimed that around 50% of cabin crew staff had turned up for work at Heathrow, but the union insisted that 80% of its 12,000 members had supported the first day of a three-day walkout.


The union said BA's Terminal 5 at Heathrow was like a "ghost town", adding that the airline contingency plans were failing.


BA described the union's claims as "rubbish", and said it had reinstated some long-haul flights this weekend because more staff had worked, including services to Miami, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, JFK in New York and Cape Town.


Union officials claimed that, during a two-hour period in the middle of the day, just 10 flights left Heathrow instead of the normal 50.


BA said the day got off to a "good start" with its contingency plans, adding later that, because 50% of cabin crew had turned up at Heathrow, it was moving to reinstate some short and long-haul flights.


A BA spokeswoman said: "Cabin crew are continuing to report as normal at Gatwick and the numbers reporting at Heathrow are above the levels we needed to operate our published schedule. At Heathrow, around 50% of cabin crew have reported as normal and we are therefore increasing the number of long-haul and short-haul flights in our schedule in the days ahead."


However a Unite spokesman said: "The support we are getting shows how strongly people feel about this and is in spite of the bullying by management. Willie Walsh's appeal for people to cross our picket lines has obviously not worked." ( source: Press Association)

£6m windfall for Barclays banker

One of Britain's richest bankers will bag another £6 million jackpot if his bank hits targets over the next three years, it has emerged.

Barclays Capital supremo Bob Diamond has been awarded the shares under a new incentive plan for the years 2010 to 2012, the bank's annual report said.

Mr Diamond also earned more than £20 million on the sale of his stake in the group's fund management arm last year, although his huge rewards have acted as a lightning rod for criticism over industry pay.


Finance director Chris Lucas could also land £1 million under the 2010-12 scheme if the bank achieves profit and shareholder return benchmarks, although chief executive John Varley declined the award.

Mr Varley and Mr Diamond recently waived bonuses for the second year in a row despite a 92% hike in annual profits to £11.6 billion - driven by a stellar investment banking performance at BarCap and the sale of Barclays Global Investors.


The bank acknowledged in February's results the "intense public interest and concern" over pay - although the annual report also revealed big payouts for the duo under previous incentive plans.


Mr Diamond - who has a much lower £250,000 basic salary but has the potential to earn higher awards under share schemes - picked up 800,000 shares after tax for the bank's performance during the 2007-09 period with a current market value of £2.9 million.


Mr Varley, who had a basic salary of £1.1 million in 2009, was also granted 165,000 shares worth almost £600,000.
This scheme was set up before the industry was forced into an overhaul of pay practices, after criticism of the bonus culture which encouraged banks into riskier positions before the financial crisis hit.


Both men have however voluntarily signed up to clawback arrangements for two years following the award and will repay the value of the shares if performance conditions have not been meet. ( source: Press association)

The Richest States in America

Ever wonder how wealthy the people are in your state? Well, we do. So we decided to do a little searching and came up with a list of the states that have the most (and fewest) millionaires. To get these numbers, we used a report from Phoenix Marketing International, which determined the number of millionaire households in each state as a percentage of the total population in that state as of mid–2009. According to Phoenix, a millionaire household is one that has at least $1 million in liquid assets, so real estate does not count. We've also included median household income by state which we took from 2008 census numbers, to provide you with a fuller picture of your state's riches.


We'll start with the 10 states that have the most millionaires and then list the 10 states that have the fewest.

10th Most Millionaires: D.C.



We know that strictly speaking D.C. isn't a "state," but they've definitely got their fair share of millionaires. Five percent of the households in the U.S. Capitol are millionaires. In fact, three of the richest counties in the U.S. as of last year were suburbs of D.C. In a thoughtful piece trying to explain this, Reason.com pinned this wealth on the large salaries that federal employees and lobbyists earn.

Percent of population that are millionaires: 5.0%
Median household income: $58,553

9th Most Millionaires: California 

California may be in the midst if a serious financial crisis, but it still has a tons of millionaires… 662,735 to be exact. That's by far the most in the country by number, but there are a ton of people in California, so it's only in 9th place relative to the total population.

8th Most Millionaires: New Hampshire


New Hampshire has more than 27,000 millionaire households, and I can only hope all of them are as interesting as Jason Sanderson, a pro–wrestler, priest and winner of a multi–million dollar jackpot.

Percentage of population that are millionaires: 5.34%
Median household income: $63,235

7th Most Millionaires: Alaska.  


Sarah Palin isn't the only millionaire in Alaska, there are more than 13,000 others. It probably doesn't hurt that there's a lot of oil money flowing through the state.

Median household income: $67,332

6th Most Millionaires: Massachusetts    


Just because there are a ton of millionaires in this state doesn't mean it's an easy place to be a millionaire. One report from a couple years ago argued that there were billions of dollars in back taxes owed in this state, and much of was from wealthy households that skimped on their tax returns.

Percent of population that are millionaires: 5.5%
Median household income: $65,304

5th Most Millionaires: Virginia 


There are more than 150,000 millionaire households in this state, many of which probably make their money for the same reasons that those in D.C. do. So it's only fitting that the citizens have plenty of millionaires running their state government. Virginia's rank may actually increase in the future as millionaires from neighboring states (which will be revealed later on the list) flock here to avoid higher taxes.

4th Most Millionaires: Connecticut 



If you've ever passed through Greenwich, Connecticut, it shouldn't surprise you too much to see this state on the list. But who knows if Connecticut's millions will be there for much longer. Late last year, Connecticut approved a new spending plan that increases taxes on the wealthiest citizens. It's not a millionaire's tax, per say, since the highest tax rate (6.5%) is applied to anyone who makes $500,000 or more, but the effect is the same.

Percent of population that are millionaires: 6.15%
Median household income: $68,294

3rd Most Millionaires: New Jersey 

There are nearly 200,000 millionaire households in this state, or 6.22% of the population, earning it a spot in the top three on our list. In 2007, New Jersey actually had the top spot with 228,442 millionaire households, but apparently some have left for other shores. Part of the problem may be New Jersey's higher tax rate. Like Connecticut, New Jersey increased the taxes for anyone earning $500,000 or more to 8.97% (it was originally 6.37%).


However, New Jersey millionaires do have at least one thing to be thankful for (besides being rich, that is). Their state also has one of the lowest divorce rates in the country, as we recently reported.

2nd Most Millionaires: Maryland  



There may be nearly 150,000 millionaire households in this state, but that number will definitely go down in the next year. As we mentioned earlier, Maryland pioneered a millionaire tax back in 2008, and as a result, many of its richer citizens seem to have fled to states like Virginia. According to the Wall Street Journal, between 2008 and 2009, the number of "million–dollar income tax returns" declined by a third. Either they are crossing state lines or just hiding out somewhere.

Median household income: $70,482

The Most Millionaires: Hawaii 



There may only be some 28,000 millionaire households in this state, but when you consider that there are less than half a million Hawaiian households in total, that number starts to seem a lot bigger. So if you're ever vacationing in Hawaii and are a little short on money to pay a bill, don't worry, there's a good chance you should be able to find someone there who could pick up the check.


Of course, in all seriousness, it's no paradise being rich in Hawaii. The state is known for having a high cost of living and last year they enacted a steep 11% income tax on anyone making more than $200,000. And yet, even with that added tax, Hawaii is still facing a severe budget crisis and there's no doubt that the poorer Hawaiians probably wish these millionaires would do even more to help.

Dump Your Debts

These days, being in debt is almost considered normal. The average UK adult has non-mortgage debts of several thousand pounds, and pays interest rates well in excess of 10% on what they owe. While the miracle of compound returns can be a fantastic thing when you're saving, it works in reverse when you're borrowing, which explains why debts often spiral out of control.

Credit cards are a major culprit here. While it's useful for borrowing money, if your card has a high interest rate and you can't afford to pay off much each month, then the credit card company is getting the benefit of compound returns - and who wants that?
Savings vs. debt: the knockout round

A common mistake for well-meaning but misguided savers is to carry debt on the credit card while accumulating savings in the building society. Unless you have a 0% card, these are good intentions, but bad maths: with savings earning, say, 5%, but debts costing 15%, there's a shortfall of 10%. It makes far better sense to use the savings to pay off the debt and start again from scratch with savings that are earning real returns.

Beware the lifelong debt!

It's impossible to overemphasise dangers of debt. Even small, seemingly harmless debts can quickly grow out of control. Take a credit card debt of £1,500. If you're charged 1.5% a month and only ever pay the minimum monthly requirement of 2% of your outstanding balance, this bill will take an astounding 37 years to clear, and at the cost of thousands of pounds of interest!


If you have non-mortgage debts, paying them off should be your top priority. Only once this is done can you really start building up your finances for the future.


Don't panic if your debts are large. The Fool has plenty of advice, and you probably have more rights than you realise if lenders are knocking at your door and your finances are causing you sleepless nights.

Ancelotti and Chelsea overwhelmed by Mourinho

LONDON (Reuters) - Outfought and out-thought on the pitch and in the dugout, Chelsea and their coach Carlo Ancelotti were like rabbits frozen into immobility by Jose Mourinho's halo at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

From the moment the teams were thrown together in the first knockout round Mourinho bestrode the tie and as Ancelotti did all he could to avoid being sucked in to the maelstrom as Chelsea conceded the emotional advantage.


Inter added a scoreboard bonus with their 2-1 San Siro win but if Ancelotti thought his compatriots were going to do their usual and defend that lead he was sorely mistaken and the visitors deserved their 1-0 win for a 3-1 aggregate success.
Mourinho's tactics of starting with three strikers, Samuel Eto'o, Diego Milito and Goran Pandev, seemed to confuse Chelsea from the kickoff and gave Inter an initiative they never relinquished.


"I wanted to sow some doubt in Chelsea and I saw some doubt," Mourinho told reporters. "Chelsea felt from the start it was Inter's game."
As Mourinho danced and gestured animatedly in his technical area, Ancelotti was still and silent.


Even when assistant coach Ray Wilkins went ballistic over an early high tackle -- having to be held back from the Inter bench by the fourth official -- Ancelotti looked on almost as a detached observer.
REAL ATTEMPT

His only real attempt to change the course of the game was the introduction of Joe Cole after an hour but even then the England midfielder tucked into a congested centre and failed to deliver the width his team and the fans were crying out for.
"I was not surprised by their formation -- that's how they played in the last 30 minutes at the San Siro," said Ancelotti.
"But I was surprised by the hard work put in by Eto'o and Pandev.
"It's fair to say we were never fully in control, they put us under a lot of pressure, they controlled the pace of the game."
If Ancelotti was guilty of an inability to change the course of the game, he was not alone in the dock.


Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard are key midfield playmakers for two leading international teams yet they failed to impose themselves on the game and were outshone by man of the match Wesley Sneijder who set up Samuel Eto's winner.
Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka were kept at arm's length with ease by the impressive Inter duo of Lucio and Same Eto'o while Florent Malouda and John Obi Mikel were anonymous.
So Chelsea's four-year home unbeaten run in the competition ended with a whimper and the painful wait for the biggest trophy of all goes on.

Dragons' Den stars in non-dom spat

Duncan Bannatyne has had a dig at Dragons' Den colleague James Caan over his tax status.

The Scottish tycoon is accusing his fellow millionaire of having an "unfair" business advantage because he is non-domiciled - meaning he does not pay UK tax on his overseas earnings.

It comes as Caan muscles into Bannatyne's health club territory, with plans to open a series of new fitness and leisure premises across the country.


Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Bannatyne said his rival's non-dom status unfairly gives him more money to invest in his UK ventures.

He said: "The non-dom situation is very relevant to business owners like me in the UK because we find ourselves at a distinct disadvantage when competing with businesses owned by non-doms.


"(Caan) is venturing into the health club industry. As I pay UK tax on all of the earnings that fund my lifestyle, and corporation tax on all the profits made by my businesses, I am clearly at an unfair disadvantage."


Bannatyne - whose business empire includes 60 health clubs bearing his name - added: "It's just as well James and I get on so well, and there couldn't be a nicer man to be in competition with, but you see my point."
He is calling for a change in the law to prevent non-domiciled residents reducing the tax paid on UK earnings by applying charges between companies in different tax jurisdictions.


The entrepreneur said: "In my view, all UK residents should have a duty to pay UK tax unless they can prove that they are paying equivalent taxes elsewhere in the world.


"This would level the business playing field and encourage, rather than stifle, the growth of enterprise and small business in this country." ( source press Association)

Building tensions

                        Relations between America and Israel reach a low point

After a raucous public slanging match, America and Israel are attempting to heal the worst rift between the countries in years. The row erupted during Joe Biden’s visit to Jerusalem last week after the Israeli government approved plans to build 1,600 new homes in a Jewish suburb located in East Jerusalem. America’s vice-president, sent to shore up relations and reassure Israel over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, took this as a gross and gratuitous insult both personally and to his boss, Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton, America’s secretary of state, berated Mr Netanyahu on the phone and went on television to inform the world what she had done. The next day tensions rose higher after Israel’s ambassador to Washington was reported to have said that the crisis was the worst between the two countries in 35 years. He later claimed that he was misquoted. On March 16th Mrs Clinton, now trying to fight the flames, said that America had “an absolute commitment to Israel's security. We have a close, unshakeable bond.”


Mrs Clinton made it clear, however, that America still wanted answers to a string of demands she had laid out to Mr Netanyahu. These reportedly include shelving the building plans and committing to negotiate on the “core issues”, including Jerusalem, in “proximity talks” that were due to have begun with the Palestinian Authority last week but are now on hold.


The demands are designed to force Mr Netanyahu to confront his domestic political predicament, which he has managed with a policy of slickly juggling his rightist-religious coalition, and his own ideological predilection for hardline nationalism. He is still juggling hard. “No government of Israel for the last 40 years has agreed to place restrictions on building in Jerusalem,” he asserted to his Likud Party on March 15th, glibly eliding the distinction between building all-Jewish suburbs and forcibly inserting Jewish settlers into Palestinian suburbs, which Mr Netanyahu encourages or at least condones. Rising tensions in the city, triggered in part by these aggressive new settlements, spilled over on March 16th in a bout of violent rioting.


Plans are in the pipeline for more building projects in many of the Jewish suburbs. Mr Netanyahu would be hard put to stop them and ensure his political survival. Some fear that American pressure to suspend all building in East Jerusalem could be counter-productive, as was Mr Obama’s initial demand for a total freeze on all settlement-building in the West Bank, including in the heavily populated “settlement blocks” close to the old border. Almost a year was wasted in niggling negotiations between America and Israel that resulted in a vague and temporary compromise that satisfied nobody.


Equally awkward for Mr Netanyahu is the American insistence that he stop dodging the important issues of Jerusalem, borders and refugees. His predecessor, Ehud Olmert, came close to agreement on all of these with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas. Mr Netanyahu says that nothing was signed and nothing is binding. The Palestinians, rueful now that they failed to nail down what was then on offer, want the new talks to resume from where the old ones left off.


The crisis has brought to the fore two deeper worries for the Israeli government. For the first time, a senior American general has linked publicly America’s failure to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with its military fortunes in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The conflict foments anti-American sentiment, due to a perception of US favouritism for Israel,” General David Petraeus said in testimony prepared for a Senate committee this week. Israeli officials and pro-Israel activists in America have been rattled by the surfacing of such sentiment. This is a “particularly pernicious” argument, says Abe Foxman, national chairman of the Anti-Defamation League and a prominent spokesman for American Jews. It “smacks of blaming the Jews for everything.”








Mr Netanyahu’s other worry, underscored by the current spat, is that Mr Foxman and other Jewish establishment figures no longer have the mainstream to themselves. J-Street, a doveish pro-Israel lobby group with rising resonance, came out strongly in support of the Obama administration and against Israel’s government. J-Street promised the administration “vast support among American Jews and other friends of Israel for a bold new approach that aims to advance that interest and guarantees Israel a secure, democratic and Jewish future.” Will Mr Obama put that prediction to the test? New pictures of Bugatti's four-door family saloon have been released. It's a million miles away from a Mondeo though, as it will cost £900,000. The 16 C Galibier should become 'the world's fastest, highest accelerating and powerful four-door,' says the maker.

Bugatti wants to sell it by 2013, when the recession will hopefully be a distant memory. However, it's not a definite production model yet, with the company still officially saying that it is 'gauging customer reaction'.
But reaction when Bugatti unveiled the car at a VW pre-show event in Geneva - which Yahoo! Cars attended - was one of awe. On that basis, the 16 C should be a reality within three years.
Powered by a version of the sixteen-cylinder engine in the Veyron, it will generate around 800bhp. That's less than the Veyron's 1,000bhp because instead of that car's four turbochargers, the 16 C will have twin superchargers. Power will be sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.


Some of the design details are sensational, including its eight tailpipes - four on each side - and the illuminated Bugatti logos on the wheel's centre caps. The rear screen is split by a thin vertical LED brake light.

Kristen Stewart's no rock star

Kristen Stewart may play a rock star on screen, but has admitted she isn't one in real life.


The Twilight star, who portrays Joan Jett in her new film The Runaways, really admires the 70s musician's rocking swagger.
"If I had that drive... It could never be fun for me to be a rock star because I'm not one," she told US talk show hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.

Kristen, who will reprise her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, had to study Joan carefully to ensure she does her justice on the big screen.
"Yeah [I felt some pressure], especially for the performances because she has such a distinct voice," she said.
"She is on fire. She stares the audience down. I've never seen anything like it and you don't know you can do it until you do it for the first time." ( source: Press association)

Jim Carrey wins top website gong

Launched last November, the revolutionary site - www.jimcarrey.com - was honoured in the film/TV category, and judged on visual design, creativity and content.

Entertainment Weekly called the site "a visually stunning treat", TotalFilm.com called it "the best site on the web", and the Wall Street Journal called it a "bizarre visual treat".
According to Entertainment Tonight, JimCarrey.com - a collaborative effort by the Christmas Carol star and interactive marketing agency 65 Media - received a whopping 35,000 hits in its first weekend after its launch, the highest for any celebrity website.

Titanic Actress Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes announce their Separation.

Oscar-winning couple Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes have announced they are to separate after six years of marriage.The couple married in 2003, two years after Mendes won an Academy Award for directing his first film, American Beauty.

Born in Reading, Berkshire in 1975, Kate Elizabeth Winslet began acting in the BBC's children's science fiction serial Dark Season in 1991.
Titanic, which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio, is Winslet's most famous film
Just three years later, in 1993, that she moved to the big screen, landing the role of Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures.
That was followed in 1996 by Sense and Sensibility, a Jane Austen adaptation that proved to be a financial and critical success.
Winslet scooped a Bafta for her performance as the flighty Marianne Dashwood, which also saw her nominated for her first Oscar.
In 1997, her role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron's Titanic made her an international star.
The massive box-office hit went on to win 11 Oscars.
But the success was overshadowed by the death of Winslet's partner of five years - actor and writer Stephen Tredre - from bone cancer, shortly before the film's release.
The actress missed the Los Angeles premiere of Titanic to attend his funeral, a decision which imbued her with a distrust of Hollywood.


"Someone I had spent four and a half years of my life with had just died," she told The Guardian in 1999, "and [the film studio] would be having conversations with me, saying things like, 'Look, we understand, this must be a very hard time' and then they'd go on to say, 'but don't you think Stephen would have wanted it?'"
"I was pretty alarmed by that."

Mendes and Winslet married in May 2003 on the island of Anguilla in the Caribbean.

Their son, Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes was born in December in New York.
Winslet's ability has not been the only focus of press attention over the years.

In 2007, she accepted an undisclosed settlement from Grazia magazine over allegations that she had visited a diet doctor.
And last year, the actress successfully sued the Daily Mail newspaper over claims she lied about her exercise regime.
She accepted £25,000 in damages.

The statement was issued after the actress flew to Mexico with her two children, one by Mendes, the other from her previous marriage to director Jim Threapleton. Mendes was with friends in New England. His Bridge Project theatre company had finished productions in New York of Shakespeare's The Tempest and As You Like It on Saturday night. New rights for credit card holders unveiled

LONDON (Reuters) - The government announced new rights for credit card users on Monday that it says will save consumers millions of pounds and give them more control over their finances.

The new rights were secured in an agreement between the government and the credit and store card companies.
The industry will introduce the key changes this year and they will be given statutory force as soon as possible, the government said.
A general election is widely expected on May 6, and recent opinion polls show the Labour Party is narrowing the lead of the Conservatives.
"These new rights will put an end to the irresponsible lending practices that people have been most concerned about, and help cut the cost of borrowing," Prime Minister Gordon Brown said in a statement.
The government estimates the new rights will save consumers almost 300 million pounds a year.


Under the agreement, the most expensive debt on consumers' cards will be paid off first, reversing the current practice. Consumers will have the right to choose not to receive credit limit increases and the right to reduce their limit at any time.
They will be given more time to reject increases in their interest rate or their credit limit.
Consumers will have an annual statement that allows easy cost comparison with other providers.
People at risk of financial difficulties will be protected by a ban on increases in their credit limit and a ban on rises in their interest rate.
The Conservatives said the Labour government had consistently failed to take tough action to stand up for consumers and had failed the test again.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

Fernando Alonso led Felipe Massa to a stunning Ferrari one-two after the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel hit trouble at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Splendid one-two win by the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro at the 2010 season’s first race. This is the 80th double win in the history of Ferrari and the Scuderia’s third victory in Bahrain.
